What Is Compass Rose Public Schools?

The Compass Rose Academy mission is to prepare students in grades K-12 to enter, succeed in, and graduate from the college of their choice. Compass Rose Academy is committed to improving educational options for students in San Antonio and Austin, TX. The Compass Rose academic program starts with a strong fundamental foundation of reading, writing, and mathematics skill and content knowledge for each of our students. We believe that students must have a strong fundamental base in these areas in order to be successful in any class, so we spend double the amount of time in literacy and math classes as more traditional schools. We also believe critical thinking is essential to student success, so we teach this skill early in the curriculum. Once students have a solid foundation of reading, writing, math, and critical thinking skills, they are prepared to accelerate ahead in all of their classes. We will also provide students with a unique STEM program that leverages the power of spiraled learning. Students begin with a Design Thinking course in 6th grade, where they learn how to understand a big problem, develop a point of view and generate ideas for solving the problem, design prototypes for solutions to the problem, and test the prototypes until an optimal solution emerges. In 7th grade, our students take a Computer Programming course, so every Compass Rose student learns how to translate design into code. In 8th grade, students put that coding knowledge to work in a Robotics and Engineering course, which requires them to design, plan, and execute long-term STEM projects. When they reach high school, our students self-select focus areas that support their design and development of entrepreneurial projects. Ultimately, the goal of the high school program is for each student to build a business plan and grow a small business over the course of four years.
