What Is Community Music Center of Boston?
Founded in 1910, CMCB is the product of two historic settlement schools that worked primarily with immigrant children - the former Boston Music School Settlement and the South End Music School, which merged in 1968. We operate a lively, bustling 8,000 square foot instructional facility in the Boston Center for the Arts, in the heart of Boston's South End. CMCB embodies the notion that music skills and social skills go hand in hand. We are motivated by a dual commitment - instruction of exceptional artistic quality and broad-based participation. Today, we serve over 5,000 individuals each week, and collaborate with nearly 35 Boston Public schools, community centers, nursing homes and hospitals. Our student body is exceptionally diverse and multicultural, with students ranging from five months to 88 years old. CMCB enjoys a rich history in the City of Boston as an educational and cultural institution. Select milestones include: Becoming a charter member of the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts in 1937. In 1956, offering music therapy for the first time with therapists who had worked previously with WWII veterans. In 1978, launching our historic partnership with the Boston Public Schools. In 1993, being the first music school in New England to receive support from the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Fund (now the Wallace Foundation) Community Arts Education Initiative. This grant was primarily for CMCB's scholarship fund, which now awards more than $110,000 annually. In 1996 CMCB Executive Director David Lapin became Board President of the National Guild of Community Schools for the Arts and presided over the Guild's 60th anniversary. Over the course of our history, musicians from Leonard Bernstein to Carol Burnett to Natalie Merchant have supported our efforts, as well as varied funders who have recognized CMCB's high artistic quality and exceptional community engagement, including the Massachusetts Cultural Council, EdVestors Collaborative Fund, MetLife Foundation, and foundations in Pennsylvania, California, New Jersey, and New York. CMCB was nominated for a Commonwealth Award in 2005, for our exceptional contributions as a cultural organization. Because of their importance to Massachusetts history, our archives constitute a special collection at the State House Library on Beacon Hill.
