What Is City of Fremantle?

City of Fremantle (the organisation) The City of Fremantle is a local government authority located 20km south of the Perth CBD comprising the suburbs of Beaconsfield, Fremantle, Hilton, North Fremantle, O'Connor, Samson, South Fremantle and White Gum Valley. Fremantle Council was founded in 1871 and it wasn't until 1929 that it gained city status. Today, the City employs more than 400 people and services approximately 30,000 residents over a land area of 19 square kilometres. The City prides itself on responsible social, economic and environmental management and was WA's first carbon neutral council in 2009. More recently, in September 2014 Fremantle became one of only two councils in Australia to achieve international One Planet certification for sustainability. The City has a strong focus on arts and culture and owns and runs the iconic Fremantle Arts Centre and world-renowned festivals including Australia's oldest festival, the Fremantle Festival. Fremantle (the place) Founded in 1829 as Western Australia's primary port, Fremantle remains WA's premier port gateway and is the state's most visited tourist destination. Renowned for its well-preserved architectural heritage, beaches, boutique shopping and established cafe and pub culture, Fremantle is considered to be Perth's second city and the unofficial arts and culture capital of Western Australia. Fremantle's biggest employment sector is health care and social assistance — 17.5% of the city's workers are employed in this area, reflecting the important influence of Fremantle Hospital. Transport, postal and warehousing provides jobs for 12.6% of workers, with retail employing a further 10.2%. Fremantle is home to Western Australia's principal general cargo port, with the Inner Harbour handling 26.1 million tonnes of cargo in 2010/11, worth $25.9b. The outer harbour at Kwinana is one of the nation's major bulk cargo ports, handling a variety of bulk commodities, from grain to LPG.
