Camarillo’s rich cultural and agricultural history reflects its beginnings as Rancho Calleguas, a 10,000 acre land grant ceded to Jose Pedro Ruiz by the Mexican government in 1837 and obtained by the Camarillo family in 1875. In its first 125 years, Camarillo grew slowly, but the end of World War II and construction of U.S. Route 101 in the mid-1950s hastened the pace of development. In 1964, with a population of approximately 10,000, the City of Camarillo was incorporated under the council-manager form of government. Camarillo remains a preferred business location for high-tech, bio-tech, retail, manufacturing and communications companies.
