Known for its wooded hills, views of the San Francisco Bay and stretches of open space, Belmont is a quiet residential community in the midst of the culturally and technologically rich Bay Area.\r\n\r\nPrior to the Spanish colonization of the San Francisco peninsula, a native american tribe called the Salson's lived here in Belmont. In 1814-15 Governor of Alta California awarded Don Jose Dario Arguello, commander of the presidios at San Francisco and Monterey, 35,000 acre grant that included Belmont. After the War with Mexico, (1846-48) the Arguello land grant was reviewed by the new government and with the help of attorney Simon Mezes, the land grant was proved to be legal and Mr. Mezes received 15% of the landholdings, which included Belmont as payment for his services.
