What Is Chris O'Brien Lifehouse?
Chris O'Brien Lifehouse is Australia's first world-class fully integrated cancer hospital. Our vision is to transform the treatment of cancer, bringing hope to the lives of cancer patients, their carers and families, and to advance the understanding, diagnosis, treatment, cure and prevention of the disease. Our integrated model of care combines everything a patient needs in one place, including allied health, complementary therapies and psychosocial support. Our purpose-built integrative medicine centre ? the LivingRoom ? provides supportive services, education and evidence-based complementary therapies that can be used in partnership with clinical care to help relieve stress, reduce pain and anxiety and manage side effects. Lifehouse is more than a state of the art cancer facility: we're an organisation with a patient-centric culture that's dedicated to delivering on our vision of uncompromising care. We also have a strong focus on educating the next generation of cancer clinicians and on medical research, including trials of new drugs, both by conducting our own research and partnering with other institutions. Lifehouse represents a unique model of care and funding in Australia as a not-for-profit independent hospital treating public and private patients. We have no shareholders and income is reinvested for the benefit of our patients. We opened our doors to outpatients in November 2013 to provide ambulatory care and outpatient services including chemotherapy and radiation oncology as well as complementary therapies. In September 2014 we opened our Day Surgery Unit, commencing endoscopy and other cancer-related day surgery onsite. In March 2015, after more than a decade of fundraising and planning, we welcomed our first inpatients to our 'house' with facilities that include 125 private overnight rooms with ensuite, eight operating theatres and a state-of-the-art intensive care unit. ?Let's build a future without cancer?? ?
