As Carteret General Hospital strives to meet the challenges of change in healthcare and our community, we also look back to appreciate how we came to be. Carteret General has an impressive history that begins years before our current doors opened in 1967. Residents of Carteret County requiring medical attention in the early 1900's arrived from the waterways and high seas to the Morehead City waterfront. To treat these patients, Dr. Ben F. Royal, Surgeon and Dr. William E. Headon, General Practitioner, established the first hospital, Morehead City Hospital with seven beds on the second floor of a building in downtown Morehead.
