What Is Carl Albert State College?
Carl Albert State College campuses are located in Eastern Oklahoma in what is known as the state's "Green Country." Surrounded by beautiful mountains and numerous lakes, the area is a paradise for residents and tourists seeking opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. The main campus is located in Poteau, Oklahoma. With a population of 10,000, Poteau is the LeFlore County seat and has been named one of "The 100 Best Small Towns in America." Fort Smith, Arkansas, a metropolitan center of approximately 80,000, is a 25-mile drive to the northeast. The college is named in honor of area native The Honorable Carl Albert, who served as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1973, the college, with an enrollment of 300, was transferred to the state system of higher education. CASC enrollment is currently approaching 3,200 and is now the largest two-year institution in the State of Oklahoma outside of Tulsa and Oklahoma City. Although located in a rural environment, CASC is now the only two-year school in a 40-mile radius serving a population base of 200,000 people. Carl Albert State College began as a small institution with a goal of providing excellence in the areas of academics, athletics, and the arts. Targeting students gifted in the areas of academics and leadership, the college has built a residential housing program that currently accommodates 300 students and plans to construct two additional facilities. Residential students are heavily funded with scholarships through private donations/funding, some of which is provided by CASC employees. CASC is dedicated to fostering excellence and preparing students to meet the challenges of the emerging global society. CASC takes pride in offering choices to students and has received national recognition for innovative programs and services.
