What Is Burnet Institute?

Burnet Institute is a not-for-profit organisation whose mission is to achieve better health for poor and vulnerable communities in Australia and internationally through research, education and public health. We aim to make a difference by applying our research outcomes to everyday health problems that impact on millions of people around the world. Our key themes include: infectious diseases; alcohol, other drugs and harm reduction; immunity, vaccines and immunisation; maternal and child health; sexual and reproductive health; and young people's health. The Institute has three operational Centres: Centre for Biomedical Research, Centre for Population Health and Centre for International Health. The Institute has a strong basic rand translational research focus developing new vaccines, rapid diagnostic tests, identifying new drugs and drug targets as well as a strong public health and international health focus. Key diseases include HIV, malaria, TB, hepatitis viruses and influenza. It is the only medical research institute in Australia also accredited as a non-government organisation. Based in Melbourne, Australia the Burnet Institute has more than 250 scientific and public health staff and more than 130 staff based in its international offices which are found in Myanmar, Laos PDR and Papua New Guinea.
