What Is Burlington Housing Authority?

Welcome to The Burlington Housing Authority! Burlington Housing Authority has served the greater Burlington community since 1961 with housing that is affordable and service supported. BHA is the oldest and the largest municipally chartered housing authority in the State of Vermont. BHA has been an industry leader as the first housing authority in New England to convert all of its public housing to the Rental Assistance Demonstration program or RAD. We are governed by a five member Board of Commissioners, who are appointed by Burlington's Mayor. While our work is enhanced and supported by many partners including local banks, the Agency of Human Services, the Department of Corrections, the Howard Center, and many others; the majority of our support is through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, through the Section 8 voucher program. We have achieved HUD's High Performer designation for the on-going effective management of the program. BHA manages over 680 apartments and issues over 1880 vouchers, including 41 home ownership vouchers. Many of BHA's properties are valuable components of historic neighborhoods and we are rightly proud of the careful rehabilitation and reuse of these historic buildings. BHA is also proud of our enriched services to program participants. We sponsor a diversified social services team with specialization in homelessness outreach, achieving economic self-sufficiency, housing retention, supportive housing for seniors, specialization in addressing hoarding tendencies, and working with DOC re-entry housing programs, to name a few. This year the United Way recognized the unique roll BHA has played in helping to dramatically reduce homelessness in the community through the combination of outreach services and enhanced vouchers. Our service area includes the communities of South Burlington, Winooski and portions of Colchester, Essex, Essex Junction, Shelburne, St. George, and Williston. We invite your interest, engagement and inquiry. Please let us know if we can be of service and assistance. Allyson Laackman, Executive Director
