What Is Black Women For Wellness?
BWW is a community based, women centered nonprofit committed to the health and well-being of Black women and girls though health education, empowerment and advocacy. Programs include Sisters @ Eight - a monthly informative roundtable for health professionals, leadership, advocates and community to help empower, mobilize, and organize toward advocacy. Civic Engagement and Voter Education increases the electoral and political power of Black women through registration and outreach during and between elections. Internet Quilt keeps pace with the cyber world through www.bwwla.org, social media platforms, and electronic newsletters. Sisters in Motion works to decrease the incidents of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity through nutrition and physical activity. Kitchen Divas conducts food demonstrations at community events and interactive workshops. Diabetes Prevention Program – Change Your Lifestyle, Change Your Life works with employers and community institutions offering lifestyle coaching and health education to prevent type 2 diabetes at the work site and in the community. Sisters in Control Reproductive Justice supports policy, utilizes program, works with advisory councils, commissions and boards to secure reproductive justice for women and girls. Get Smart B4U Get Sexy supports peer advocates shifting attitudes on sex and sexuality through comprehensive sex and sexuality education. Environmental Justice engages and educates community members to influence local, state and national policies that regulate the safety of chemical use in cosmetics and personal care products. Healthy Hair Initiative researches the correlation of chemicals and toxins in personal and beauty products and the ill effects on the health of beauty professionals and consumers to argue the case for regulation and transparency. BWW conducted ACA Outreach Education in 2013 - 2014 to increase access to health systems for the uninsured and under-insured.
