What Is Besser Co?
Herman Besser brought his family to the north woods of Michigan in 1883 to join in the logging of the great pine forests. In 1897 he opened a mill to manufacture shingles and barrel staves. Jesse Besser, born in 1882, worked with his father and early on exhibited the abilities of an artful businessman with a fertile and inventive mind.Near the end of the 1800s the lumber industry began to decline in Michigan, so Herman and Jesse Besser looked to other sources of potential business. The Alpena area was rich in limestone, and soon cement manufacturing developed as an industry. Herman took a prominent role in this, serving as president of the Alpena Portland Cement Company. It was soon evident that there was great potential for a machine that could use cement to manufacture concrete block.
