What Is Anchor Brewing Company?

Running full steam ahead, craft brewer Anchor Brewing sells about 86,000 barrels a year of its seven brews. Led by flagship beer Anchor Steam, the company's beers and ales also include Anchor Porter, Anchor Small Beer, Anchor Summer, Liberty Ale, Old Foghorn, and Christmas Ale -- a seasonal holiday brew that changes each year. Started in the 1860s, the brewery was saved from bankruptcy in 1965 by current owner and brewmaster Fritz Maytag (an heir to the Maytag appliance fortune). Anchor Brewing sells its brews in the US, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, the Netherlands, and the UK. The company also operates Anchor Distilling, which produces Junípero gin and Old Potrero rye whiskey.
