What Is American Society of Safety Professionals?

Founded in 1911, our Society sets the standard for occupational safety and health (OSH) excellence and ethics. We connect over 37,000 OSH professionals around the world, creating a network of resources in 80 countries. We promote the expertise, leadership and commitment of our members, while providing them with the tools and information they need to succeed. We are a visible advocate for OSH professionals through proactive government affairs at the federal and state levels, and in member-led relationships with key federal safety and health agencies. Our members create safer work environments by preventing workplace fatalities, injuries and illnesses. Besides recording less lost time and lower workers’ compensation costs, organizations with strong safety performance enjoy increased productivity, a better reputation and higher employee satisfaction. Workplace safety is constantly evolving. So are we. That’s why, in 2017, our members took a historic step in approving a name change that better reflects the makeup of our membership. In 2018, we officially changed our name from the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) to the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP). By moving forward with one voice, we can commit even more fully to what’s important: working together for a safer, stronger future.
