What Is Naval Academy Preparatory School?

Founded in 1845, USNA today is a prestigious 4-year service academy that prepares midshipmen morally, mentally and physically to be professional officers in the naval service. More than 4,400 men and women representing every state in the U.S. and several foreign countries make up the student body, known as the Brigade of Midshipmen. U.S. News & World Reports has recognized the Naval Academy as a top 5 undergraduate engineering school and a top 20 best liberal arts college. Midshipmen learn from military and civilian instructors and participate in intercollegiate varsity sports & extracurricular activities. They also study subjects like leadership, ethics, small arms, drill, seamanship and navigation, tactics, naval engineering and weapons, and military law. Upon graduation, midshipmen earn a B.S. degree in a choice of 25 different subject majors and go on to serve at least five years of exciting and rewarding service as commissioned officers in the USN or USMC. The Academy is set on 338 acres between the south bank of the Severn River and historic downtown Annapolis, which is 33 miles east of Washington D.C., and 30 miles south of Baltimore. USNA operates with over 600 military personnel and approximately 1,500 non-contract civilian employees, with an annual operating budget of over $150 million. The approximately 500-member USNA academic faculty & staff is an integrated group of military and civilian instructors in approximately equal numbers. The student-faculty ratio is 8:1, with most class sizes ranging from 10 to 22 students. We are dedicated to uphold the mission of the institution: "To develop Midshipmen morally, mentally and physically and to imbue them with the highest ideals of duty, honor and loyalty in order to graduate leaders who are dedicated to a career of naval service and have potential for future development in mind and character to assume the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship & government."
