Or worry about their funnel metrics every single day. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, Drift cares about conversations <em>over<\/em> conversions. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advanceb2b.com\/thegrowthhub\/podcast-david-cancel-drift\">Growth Hub podcast<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dcancel\">David Cancel<\/a>, CEO and Co-Founder at Drift, shares what it means to do things that don\u2019t scale, like showing up and talking to people:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnyone in the early days who would want us to talk about anything: I was on the plane. I\u2019m on the bus, I\u2019m on the whatever, I\u2019m going there, no matter what. We did it. I did it for years in the beginning. I\u2019d go talk in front of 10 people, 20 people, whatever, 1 person. It didn\u2019t matter. If there was someone, I was gonna go out and reach out.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drift sticks to the principle of treating <em>people<\/em> like <em>people,<\/em> rather than <em>leads<\/em> \u2013 which includes creating great customer experiences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>David elaborates: \u201cWe continue to do this. We do it in person, we also do it online. So someone leaves a comment somewhere? I\u2019m replying to that comment. If they have some experience, I\u2019m following up, I\u2019m sending them a t-shirt, I\u2019m sending them books.\u201d <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also added that not only would his team give away books they\u2019d written, but they\u2019d also personally deliver them. It\u2019s that high level of personal interaction that keeps Drift growing.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Something else that\u2019s hard to scale?<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Being a great leader.<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without strong leadership, many companies find themselves initially growing only to plateau later. Scaling at hyper speeds requires clear direction from the company\u2019s leaders.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/davegerhardt\">Dave Gerhardt<\/a>, VP of Marketing at Drift, &nbsp;created the <em>Drift Leadership Principles<\/em> to ensure that everyone on their team works toward the same goal.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are: <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Put the customer at the center of everything you do, <\/li><li>Create a culture of respect and trust, <\/li><li>Practice extreme ownership, <\/li><li>Have a bias for action and deliver daily results,<\/li><li>Seek feedback, not consensus, <\/li><li>Push for high standards, <\/li><li>Stay scrappy and frugal and <\/li><li>Be a curious learning machine.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>With these fundamentals, Drift\u2019s leaders hold themselves accountable to growing the business. Plus, the principles permeate to every facet of the company. Dave said: <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe put these Leadership Principles at the center of everything we do. We reference them during the hiring process, in all-company meetings and also in our individual manager check-ins.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Great leadership opens the door to building an army of in-house supporters. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Building teams first, not products.<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drift\u2019s commitment to hiring talented team members also has contributed to its growth. This investment is their cornerstone for building great products. Dave added:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt Drift, we believe you build teams first &#8212; and the products will follow. As such, hiring and recruiting is one of the engines and systems we invest in the most at Drift in order to make sure we\u2019re recruiting, hiring, training and onboarding the right people for the right stage of the company.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Team alignment matters when scaling a business. When teams aren\u2019t on the same page, it\u2019s easy for business goals to get misinterpreted. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drift achieves team alignment with constant communication coupled with honest feedback. Dave explained:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne way we do this is through regular feedback &#8211; with our managers and other members of the team. We believe in radical candor, real and honest feedback and showing your work. We also want everyone to be having regular development conversations with their managers (in addition to weekly 1:1s) so they are aligned on where they are and where they need to get better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To grow quickly, Drift believes marketing isn\u2019t limited to people with <em>marketing<\/em> titles. Marketing is everybody\u2019s job in the company. So, when they hire team members, Drift looks for people passionate about serving customers. Dave added:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLastly, one of our core values is that we put the customer at the center of everything we do. So we are naturally looking for and drawn to people who are customer-driven &#8212; no matter if they are from sales, marketing, design or engineering. Knowing that we are all making decisions to solve our customers\u2019 problems gives us a reason to always be our best.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What\u2019s next:<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drift will continue their customer-centric strategy. They won\u2019t stress over creating the perfect spreadsheets or optimizing another HTML template. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drift will repeat their unscalable tactics.
