About
StarKist will not purchase any tuna caught in association with dolphins. StarKist continues its practice of refusing to purchase tuna caught with gill or drift nets, which are known to be dangerous to many forms of marine life. StarKist condemns the use of these indiscriminate fishing methods that trap dolphins, whales, and other marine life along with the intended catch of fish. StarKist was the first major American tuna canning company to make this commitment to the public. We remain committed to this policy and require certification that all tuna we purchase is dolphin-safe. Our dolphin-safe policy includes StarKist® tuna as well as all of our branded and private label products, and StarKist® tuna is labeled with a special "Dolphin Safe" logo. Q. What is the shelf-life of StarKist® Canned Tuna? A. Unopened StarKist® canned tuna has a recommended shelf-life of up to four years, provided the product has been stored under normal conditions and the can is not dented or damaged. As of January 2004 we have begun printing a "Best By" Date on cans of StarKist® Tuna. However, for cans without a "Best By" Date, you can use the manufacturing code information to tell whether the can is still within the recommended shelf-life. This code is printed or embossed on the lid or bottom of the can and consists of two rows of letters and numbers. Please look at the second, or bottom row of the code. The bottom row ends with a letter of the alphabet, which stands for the year in which the product was packed. The letter "M" means the tuna was packed in 2003, the letter "L" means the tuna was packed in 2002, and the letter "K" means the tuna was packed in 2001. Q. What is the shelf-life of the StarKist Flavor Fresh Pouch® and StarKist Tuna CreationsÔ? A. Unopened StarKist® Tuna in a Pouch has a recommended shelf-life of 3 years, provided the pouch is not damaged and the product has been stored under normal conditions. As of January 2004 we have begun printing a "Best By" Date on StarKist® Tuna Pouches. However, for pouches without a "Best By" Date, you can use the manufacturing code information to tell whether the product is still within the recommended shelf-life. This code is printed on the back of the pouch, near the middle section, and consists of a series of letters and numbers. The last letter in the code stands for the year in which the product was packed. The letter "M" means the tuna was packed in 2003; and the letter "L" means the tuna was packed in 2002. Q. Why do cans of albacore tuna sometimes list different amounts of Total Fat on the Nutrition Facts? A. The nutritional content of albacore may vary naturally from catch to catch. In particular, the fat and calorie content will differ slightly depending on the region or depth where the fish are caught. Albacore tuna that swim close to the water surface can be higher in fat than tuna caught in deep ocean waters. Since availability of albacore tuna may vary from season to season, we use two different labels to accurately show the fat and calorie content of the product contents. If you are limiting your fat intake, we recommend you check the nutritional label prior to purchase. Also, StarKist® Low Sodium Chunk White Tuna uses albacore tuna that has been specially selected for its low sodium and fat content. Q. How do you recommend storing StarKist® Tuna after it's opened? A. After opening, any remaining tuna should be placed in a sealed container (we don't recommend keeping it in the can or pouch) and refrigerated. The tuna should be used within 3-4 days. Tuna may be frozen in a freezer bag or plastic container. We do not recommend freezing product while in the can. Q. Do I need to refrigerate StarKist® Tuna in a Pouch before using? A. Since the StarKist Flavor Fresh Pouch® is a vacuum-sealed product, there's no need to refrigerate the pouch before opening. Q. What kind of vegetables are used in the vegetable broth? A. Vegetable broth is added to some StarKist® Tuna products as a flavor enhancer. The vegetable broth is made from dehydrated vegetables as determined by FDA (Food & Drug Administration) standards. The broth must consist of two or more of the following: beans, cabbage, carrots, celery, garlic, onions, parsley, peas, potatoes, green or red bell peppers, spinach, or tomatoes. If you have dietary restrictions or allergies to any of these ingredients, you might want to try StarKist® Low Sodium Tuna which contains only tuna and water, or Gourmet's Choice Tuna Fillet which is available packed in water or olive oil. Q. Does StarKist® Tuna contain any gluten or grain ingredients? There is no gluten in StarKist® Tuna with the exception of one variety of Tuna Creations - Herb & Garlic, which contains ingredients from wheat and barley. Additionally the crackers in StarKist Lunch to-Go® would contain gluten. Please note that due to product changes or new product introductions, we always recommend you check the ingredient statement for the most current ingredient information. Q. If I have other questions or comments about StarKist® products, how do I contact you? A.
