It was built in the 1870s by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild to house his superb art collection and entertain fashionable Victorian visitors. Bequeathed to the National Trust and opened to the public in the late 1950s, its cultural legacy lives on under the stewardship of the Rothschild Foundation.
