What Is Social Thinking?

Social Thinking, founded by Michelle Garcia Winner, is named after Michelle’s unique approach to teaching communication and relationship building that is now used all over the world. Social Thinking generates and teaches lessons for improving social learning that can be used broadly with students with social cognitive deficits, including those with Autism Spectrum Disorders, Asperger’s Syndrome, ADHD, Social communication disorders, Gifted & Talented, and those undiagnosed with strong language skills but relatively weak social intelligence. Social Thinking’s core information can also be applied at home, in the community, and in the mainstream classroom as part of Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports, Character Building, Response to Intervention, Social Emotional Learning Initiatives (CASEL), as well as with adults in the workplace. Social Thinking is unique in that: 1. It is best used for persons who have solid to gifted scientific learning and language skills. We provide developmentally-based instruction for individuals age 4 years old through adulthood. 2. It guides others on how best to teach social concepts. We instruct a large range of professionals, regardless of their degree or training, and parents of those with social learning challenges. 3. It developed the Social Thinking Social Communication Profile to distinguish the learning needs of people with different social learning abilities, regardless of if they have strong IQs and similar diagnostic labels. 4. It demonstrates how the social mind is critical for students to perform to the standards of education in their state or country. We use our social minds for critical thinking to be successful doing core academic tasks such as reading comprehension, written expression, abstract reasoning, etc. 5. It is all about “flexible thinking” and evolving with time. We help our clients improve their social abilities, and we continue to evolve our teachings as we learn from our clients.
