What Is Colorado Access?

Colorado Access is a 501(c)4 corporation operating as a nonprofit health maintenance organization with an emphasis on primary care and quality outcomes for medically underserved Coloradans. The company was established in late 1994 by The Children's Hospital, Colorado Community Managed Care Network, Denver Health and University of Colorado Hospital/University Physicians Inc. In October 1995, Colorado Access was granted its certificate of authority to operate as a health plan by the State of Colorado; it officially began operation on Dec. 1, 1995. Since then, the company has gained the largest share of Medicaid and Child Health Plan Plus members among participating health plans in the state. The development of Colorado Access was an important healthcare milestone in Colorado, as it represented a concerted effort on the part of the state's major safety-net providers to reinvent healthcare delivery for populations that were not historically part of an integrated managed care system. Colorado Access has served as a vehicle for bringing together these providers to work toward common goals. It is the expectation of the organizations that comprise Colorado Access that members will have continues access to high-quality, cost-effective care delivered through an integrated system of healthcare providers dedicated to improving overall health member status. Access Health Plan, Colorado Access' Medicaid physical health plan, is responsible for managing the cost of care for eligible Medicaid categories of aid including: Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Baby Care/Kids Care, Aid to the Needy Disabled (AND), Aid to the Blind and the Old Age Pension Program.
