What Is Brooklyn College?

About Brooklyn College Brooklyn College is recognized for its academic excellence, innovative programs, urban engagement and outstanding alumni accomplishments. The college offers more than 120 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in the creative arts, humanities, social and behavioral sciences, natural sciences and mathematics, education and business. For 80 years, Brooklyn College men and women-many of them immigrants or the children of immigrants-have received a superior, affordable education leading to productive careers and fulfilled lives. Noted for its renowned faculty, talented and diverse student body, and beautiful urban campus, Brooklyn College has been designated as one of "America's Best Value Colleges" by the Princeton Review. The new West Quad Center, which houses the college's student services, as well as state-of-the-art physical education and athletic facilities, was opened in summer 2009. In fall 2010, a new residence hall opened for Brooklyn College students. By the Numbers In fall 2010, 16,912 students-12,084 undergraduates and 4,108 graduate students-enrolled at the college. Brooklyn College undergraduates are largely traditional college age and come from all over the country and the world. The college's admissions criteria have become increasingly selective, applications continue to rise, and high-achieving students are increasingly attracted to the Macaulay Honors College at Brooklyn College and various programs in the Honors Academy. BC Supports Student Success and Academic Enhancement The college's highly regarded core curriculum provides all undergraduates with a broad background in the liberal arts and sciences. Strong advisement programs ensure that students are well advised and effectively mentored throughout their course of study. First College Year facilitates the transition to college with summer bridge programs and with Learning Communities that strengthen bonds among new students and the faculty. International education programs offer study abroad opportunities around the world. Brooklyn College professors provide undergraduate and graduate students with a wide variety of research opportunities and community-based learning initiatives. A World-Class Faculty Over the past decade, the Brooklyn College faculty has experienced a renaissance, expanding and diversifying with the hiring of more than 250 new scholars who now make up 50 percent of the full-time teaching faculty. Our professors have received prestigious Fulbright, Guggenheim, and Woodrow Wilson fellowships and are the recipients of major sponsored research support from national funding institutions such as NASA, the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the Department of Education. Ursula Oppens, world-renowned concert pianist and contemporary American music performer, joined the faculty in 2009. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and Brooklyn College alumnus Paul Moses returned to the college in 2001 to teach in CUNY's oldest journalism program. The faculty also includes Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and writer Edwin Burrows, Guggenheim Fellowship composer Tania León, Obie Award-winning playwright Mac Wellman, internationally recognized computer theorist Rohit Parikh, esteemed audiologist Shlomo Silman, leading expert in microalgae biotechnology Juergen Polle and political scientist and author Corey Robin. Student Life Student life at Brooklyn College is active, diverse and multifaceted. Our students are engaged in more than 100 student clubs and organizations spanning a broad range of cultural, ethnic, community, media, arts, social action, religious and other special interests. More than one dozen fraternities and sororities bring Greek life to campus. Intramural sports are popular, and the college's basketball, cross country, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball teams compete at the Division III level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The library, with extended hours, and the 24-hour Library Café are popular student study and meeting sites. Brooklyn College benefits from its dynamic urban setting and is committed to making a positive impact in the wider community. The college fosters active partnerships and associations with Brooklyn's leading cultural, business and health care institutions, including the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Brooklyn Arts Council, Brooklyn Public Library, Brooklyn Navy Yard, Steiner Studios and Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, as well as the borough's leading hospitals and health care organizations. The college has long cultivated a strong partnership with Brooklyn's public schools, and many of our education graduates are employed in schools throughout the borough and New York City. Building for the Future Groundbreaking for the Leonard and Claire Tow Center for the Performing Arts will begin in spring 2011. The new facility will provide 21st-century acoustics for future theater, music and dance productions at the college. Design plans are also under way for a new state-of-the-art science complex.
