What Is Barts Cancer Institute?

Barts Cancer Institute (BCI), Queen Mary University of London, is a leading UK cancer research institute, and together with the Centre for Cancer Prevention (Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine), forms the Cancer Research UK (CRUK) Barts Centre. The CRUK Barts Centre is a key partner in the CRUK City of London Centre.\n\nUnder the leadership of the Director, Professor Nick Lemoine, and supported by an Executive Board of senior investigators, we have created an academic environment fitting for an internationally recognised, comprehensive cancer centre. BCI, as part of the Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, is in the top 10 multi-faculty research institutions (REF 2014).\n\nWe are generously supported by research councils, industry, and a host of charities, with the grants awarded totalling in excess of £15m per year.\n\nOur research goal is to prevent cancer and develop better diagnostic techniques and treatments. Ultimately we aim to improve survival for people with cancer and enhance the quality of life for those with long-term disease.\n\nWe also use our expertise to teach and educate students and professionals about the science of and gold-standard clinical approaches to cancer, and to engage our local population.\n\nWe hope to make the often difficult subject of cancer accessible to anyone that requires or is interested in our research.
